Client : Katy, Director in a consultancy organisation.

Requirement : Katy came for mentoring a year after starting as Project Manager on an IT development project. She had found this very stressful, having no experience of project management, people management or IT, and her project had gone over budget.

She needed to rebuild her self-confidence and find practical ways forward for managing her team. She also wanted to look at her career development.

Solution : Mentoring helped Katy understand that her reaction to a difficult situation was perfectly normal. She realised that many people in her situation would have similar problems. This helped her to be less self-critical, and take a more objective approach to managing the situation.

Working with Katy we explored team motivation and examined ways for her to build better rapport with team members. Katy was preparing for a high-profile project review meeting. We discussed what she needed to achieve from it, and looked at strategies she could use to do so.

Looking at career development we identified her needs and the career options that would meet them.

Outcome : Katy gained a six-month secondment to a project that was a good match with her skills and aspirations.
