Client : A provider of supply chain solutions for the communications industry.

Requirement : A three-year training programme to develop team and personal skills, working with 8-10 team members at a time. The programme is tailored to the specific needs of the organisation and linked to project work within the business.

Solution : Year 1 begins with a two-day workshop looking at team dynamics, interpersonal skills, team roles and people’s own individual learning styles. The team put their skills into action with practical tasks, and use this experience to discuss and refine the way they work together.

We give the rest of this year’s training in four one-day workshops: Project Management Skills; Communicating and Influencing; Managing Stress and Pressure; and Leadership. We tailor them all to assist and support the team’s current projects within the business.

In Year 2 the teams take on more responsibility for their own learning and our role is more facilitation than training. The teams bring their own work and project-related issues to the sessions. We support them in learning about problem-solving processes and managing their own team dynamics.

In Year 3 we support team members with one-to-one coaching in a series of short, intensive sessions that build on their skills and enhance their ability to resolve their own issues in the workplace.

Outcome : CBP have been running this programme with great success for three years, and are now starting work with a fourth group of staff.

Participants commented:
  • ‘The workshop was really useful in helping us to focus on how we should move forward with our project.’
  • ‘I learned about the value of asking questions as well as thinking of solutions.’
  • ‘I have learned how to be assertive and now feel much more in control of situations.’
  • ‘The programme has really helped me to come out of myself.’
  • ‘I now have a greater awareness of how I come across and I can use this to build good relationships.’
Members of the board highlighted several benefits to the business, including more confident staff and better project management and teamworking. They cited a key benefit as grooming the next level of management so that participants are ready to take on more responsibility.
